About the project

01The brief

KUKA Hockey sells its own GRX composite sticks, protection, goalkeeping and beach hockey gear, plus made-to-order club kit, from Leeds on Shopify. The store runs on Debut, a Shopify theme that has since been retired. Several menu links go nowhere: Indoor Sticks sends people back to the homepage, Clearance opens a search page, and Clothing and Accessories are empty. There are no store policies, no contact or about page, a sponsorship banner still dated 2025/26, and spelling mistakes baked into the category images. Club kit and sponsorship, which could be a steady source of team orders, had no page to capture an enquiry.

02The design

KUKA was shown two concepts and chose the first, then the design grew into a full store. It keeps the K mark, now drawn from KUKA's own logo files, and the black, silver and gold of the GRX range, with red kept small as a signature: a full stop on every heading and an edge on every button. The hero is a photo from KUKA's own brand shoot, and the rest of the site uses their product shots and photos of the clubs and teams that wear the kit. Nothing is stock.

03How it works

A player buying an elite stick needs to know which shape suits how they play, which length to choose and that it is in stock, then reach checkout without friction. Every GRX card has tap-a-length buttons, a stick finder matches a playing style to a shape, and the product page carries a length guide, a spec table and Buy now beside Add to bag. A bag drawer offers the protection that goes with the stick, then one tap to checkout. Clubs get their own route: a kit builder for designing shirts and shorts in their colours, and a sponsorship application, so a team order never starts with a hunt for an email address.

The finished site.

The homepage from top to bottom, the phone layout beside it and two sections up close.

What was delivered.

A custom Shopify theme: a redesigned homepage, six pages (Hockey sticks, Gear, Apparel, Stick finder, Sponsorship and Build your own kit), a new product page, a new bag and checkout route, and live product search. KUKA can change the photos and wording in every section from the Shopify editor. It installs into KUKA's existing store, so products, orders, customers and the domain stay where they are. Nothing was invented to fill space: the reviews, welcome offer and free delivery sections stay switched off until KUKA has the real thing.
